On December 12th 2013, the Jersey City Police Department increased its manpower by swearing in 34 newly appointed police officers. The ceremony was held at City Hall with an opening statement from the Honorable Mayor Steven Fulop, who congratulated the officers and thanked them for their service to the city. Chief of Police Robert Cowan advised them to always remain "courteous and professional." Chief Cowan further stated "You are the leaders of tomorrow" encouraging the officers to always strive to better themselves professionally throughout their careers. The newly sworn officers were assigned to the four precincts to begin their patrol duties.
