JCPD Welcomes 38 New Police Officers to the Force

On June 10th 2014, Mayor Steve Fulop, Public Safety Director James Shea and Police Chief Robert Cowan added 38 new Police officers to the Jersey City Police Department. Director James Shea thanked the families of all the new police officers for their sacrifice and support in allowing these officers to join the department. Prior to being sworn in, the new officers not only had to pass a state-issued examination but underwent multiple levels of testing, interviewing, background investigations as well as six months of training at the Police academy. "We expect you to show the public you serve that we C.A.R.E." stated Chief Cowan. He further stated "You are here to address that small percentage of people who chooses to do bad." This ongoing commitment by the city to make public safety a high priority brings the Jersey City Police force to 818 sworn personnel.
